IVECO donation boosts truck driver assessment in Ghana

• Transaid corporate partner, IVECO, has donated a Stralis tractor unit to be used for examiner training and driver assessment in Accra, Ghana.
• The vehicle will support an ongoing partnership between Transaid and the Ghana Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
• The donation is the latest milestone in a longstanding partnership between IVECO and Transaid to improve road safety across sub-Saharan Africa.

An IVECO Stralis, donated by Transaid corporate partner IVECO, has entered service as a training vehicle at the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Accra, Ghana, following the formal key handover, which took place on Thursday 23 July.

The truck will be used to support both practical driver assessments and instructor development as part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and driving standards across the country. The donation will serve as a dedicated vehicle for examiner training and for the practical assessment of F-Class licence applicants.

Building sustainable capacity

The handover ceremony was about far more than the donation of a vehicle. It was about strengthening institutions, raising professional standards, and reaffirming our collective commitment to making Ghana’s roads safer for everyone and ultimately saving lives.”

Building lasting relationships

The donation builds on Transaid’s partnership with the DVLA in Ghana, which began in 2021. Through the Driving Safety Across Ghana programme, funded by the Puma Energy Foundation, Transaid, the DVLA, other government agencies and industry stakeholders are working to promote safer road user behaviour and help reduce the incidence of road traffic collisions through strengthening driver training capacity and the nationwide rollout and adoption of the new HGV driver training standard, launched in 2024.

This latest vehicle donation by IVECO builds on a long history of support by the manufacturer, which included the donation of a Stralis for a similar driver training project in Tanzania in 2011. Previously, IVECO had also donated three new Daily vans to support an access to healthcare project in Ghana, and an on/off-road Trakker to help with the post-Tsunami clean-up in Sri Lanka.

IVECO employees have also participated in Transaid’s cycle challenges for the last four years, including this year’s ride from London to the Isle of Wight. Transaid was also selected as the beneficiary for IVECO’s Mission Awards for 2026, an event that celebrates standout fleets, resilient businesses, and innovative vehicle body builds.
