Evidence brief: Key Results from MAMaZ Against Malaria – A Pilot Project Focused on Increasing Rural Communities’ Access to Rectal Artesunate

According to Zambia’s national Health Management Information
System (HMIS), a reported 1,851 Zambians died of malaria in
2016. Many other malaria deaths occur at community level and
go unrecorded. Reported malaria cases increased between 2015-
2016. If Zambia is to achieve the global target of a 40% reduction
in malaria incidence by 2020, a priority focus on areas of highest
mortality, including severe malaria in young children, will be
important.

This evidence brief presents the key results from the MAMaZ Against Malaria (MAM) project, a pilot focused on increasing rural communities’ access to rectal artesunate.

Lalana Project – Final Report

In 2017, Transaid teamed up with implementing partners ONG Lalana to deliver the ALFA Project (Aro Loza amin’ny Fifamoivoizana An-tsekoly, meaning ‘education and awareness of schoolchildren on road safety’). Funded through Transaid’s Innovation Fund, Lalana’s aim was to reduce the number of road traffic crashes involving primary school children travelling to and from school, in Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo.

Together with Transaid’s support and Amend’s technical expertise, Lalana implemented a programme aiming to educate students and raise awareness in the entire community, as well as introducing better signage and markings around schools in order to tackle the problem from all sides. However, the project’s educational efforts went beyond the classroom.

MAM evidence brief – key results

This technical brief presents the key results from the MAMaZ Against Malaria (MAM) project which was established in July 2017.

MAMaZ against Malaria is a one year pilot project, funded by the Geneva-based foundation, Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV). The project aims to devise an evidence-based and sustainable strategy to improve the access of hard-to-reach communities to effective treatment for severe malaria (SM) in a high malaria burden setting.

The project is being implemented by a consortium led by Transaid in partnership with Health Partners Zambia, Development Data and Disacare. The consortium is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Zambia, specifically the National Malaria Elimination Centre, and the District Health Management Team for Serenje District.

Vehicle Logbook [Arabic version]

This Logbook is to be used to gather quantitative data to assist senior management to make informed decisions. Data gathered includes distance travelled via odometer readings, number of loading points, number of drivers driving hours and project activity. This data can then be used to produce a series of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), using simple calculations, such as vehicle availability and on time deliveries and more.

MAMaZ for Malaria (MAM) dissemination event in Zambia

The event brought together various stakeholders to present findings from the MAMaZ against Malaria (MAM) pilot programme which ended in July, 2018. The event  was hosted by the National Malaria Elimination Centre (NMEC) and results were shared from the project ‘Developing innovative approaches to increase rural access to commodities for the case management of severe malaria in Zambia’.

The initiative was implemented in close partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Serenje District Health Management Team (DHMT) and was funded by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), who also provided ongoing technical support. To read more about the MAM programme, please click here.

H12. Emergency Transport Scheme user survey form

This tool is to be used to gather qualitative and quantitative data from users of an Emergency Transport Scheme. The tool gathers data such as costs, timings and information on health seeking behaviours to inform the intervention as well as to provide information for effective project management.

They have been used in the five year Emergency Transport Scheme (ETS) project which ended in 2018 and aimed to contribute to reducing maternal mortality in Adamawa State, Northern Nigeria. The project partnered with the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ (NURTW) commercial taxi drivers who were trained to provide an affordable, accessible, safe and timely emergency transport service for pregnant women in labour or for those experiencing complications during their pregnancy.

Instructional Ability Assessment form

This tool is used to assess the instructional ability of the candidate at the beginning and at the end of training.  This tool is currently being used for our Professional Driver Training- Uganda project (PDT-U) which is building the capacity of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and passenger service vehicle (PSV) driver training in Uganda in cooperation with industry partners. This enhanced capacity will increase employment of Ugandan drivers in the transport sector and improve road safety. To read more on the PDTU project, please click here.
