Join our webinar: Improving safe access to public transport for women living in townships in the Western Cape
Thursday 19 February 2026 (via Zoom):
11:00 GMT / 13:00 SAST
Safe, reliable public transport is more than a convenience; it is a lifeline to education, employment and essential services. For many women living in the peripheral areas of Cape Town, however, travelling by minibus taxi is often accompanied by concerns about personal safety and security.
Women have consistently reported experiences and fears of harassment and sexual and gender-based violence (S+GBV), particularly when travelling alone.
In response to these challenges, Transaid partnered with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Women’s Desk to deliver an innovative project aimed at improving safety for women passengers. Funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), the project combined S+GBV awareness campaigns, targeted training, and ongoing mentorship for taxi operators working in key taxi ranks.
By engaging directly with a predominantly male workforce, the initiative sought to shift attitudes and behaviours and contribute to a safer, more inclusive public transport environment for women.
Join our webinar and learn more about the project from Transaid Project Manager, Dennis Simuyuni, and Chairperson of the SANTACO Women’s Desk in the Northern Region, Sharon Petrus.
