Public transport through a gender lens, equity and inclusion:

Young women, peer researchers, academics and NGO staff working in partnership to address the challenges to both women’s transport mobility and employment in the public transport sector in three African cities.

Transaid will be hosting a webinar to present an overview of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded, Durham University led research project that examined the day to day challenges experienced by women in accessing public transport both as users and as employees in Abuja, Cape Town and Tunis.

The webinar will take place on Thursday, 11th August 2022:
11:00 (BST)
11:00 (West Africa Time)
12:00 (South Africa Time)
13:00 (East Africa Time)

Access to public transport is constrained by the potential threats to personal safety experienced by women on a daily basis, in turn limiting women’s access to education, employment and healthcare. This problem is exacerbated by a male dominated transport sector, which restricts influence by women.

This webinar will share the key learnings from this project, which sought to broaden our understanding of the challenges faced by women in accessing public transport, and implement pilot projects to respond to some of the findings of the research in each of the three cities.

Speakers include:
• Sam Clark (Transaid)
• Gina Porter (Durham University)
• Emma Murphy (Durham University)
• Fatima Adamu (Usaman Danfodio University)
• Shadi Ambrosini (Transaid)

We will also be answering any questions you may have in a Q&A session at the end.
