£3,039 raised for Transaid at UKWA Awards

Transaid attended the United Kingdom Warehousing Association’s (UKWA) Annual Lunch and Awards event at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London this week, and over £3,000 was raised for our programmes.

Speakers included Baroness Scott of Bybrook, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, a welcome address from UKWA CEO Clare Bottle, and an update from Transaid’s CEO Caroline Barber. Caroline thanked UKWA and the attendees for their continued support of Transaid, before sharing updates on many of Transaid’s road safety and access to healthcare programmes across sub-Saharan Africa.

Caroline said: “Over the last 12 months Transaid and our partners have been busy training over 6,000 professional drivers in Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique and Ghana.

“Our emergency transport programmes in Zambia, Nigeria, Uganda and Madagascar have helped thousands of women and children to access emergency medical care when they needed it most.”

UKWA’s special guest and compere – Broadcaster, journalist, and political commentator – Ayesha Hazarika hosted the event, sharing stories, and presenting the trade association’s prestigious awards.

£2,314 of the total was raised with a game of ‘Heads or Tails’, in which guests were invited to guess the outcome of a coin toss in a knock-out tournament, with a bottle of champagne, kindly donated by Warehouse and Logistics News, awarded to the final contestant.

The rest of the total was raised through pledge cards during the event, with attendees having the option to fund training for female drivers through Transaid’s programmes in Uganda and Ghana, to purchase a bicycle for a community health volunteer in Zambia, or to fund training for a motorcycle rider in Kenya.

Transaid thanks Miniclipper Logistics, OMS Limited and Global Warehousing and Storage for their generous pledge card donations, and all of the attendees for their support of Transaid during the event, as well as UKWA, one of our corporate members, for kindly hosting Transaid as the beneficiary charity once again.

Transaid offers congratulations to all of the award winners, and also to the finalists, for their outstanding achievements over the past year. Find out more about UKWA and the 2022/23 Awards here.
