Technical brief: Madereva Salama Zaidi (Safer Roads)
The Northern Corridor is a vital trade route linking the Port of Mombasa in Kenya to several landlocked countries across East and Central Africa. While it serves as a lifeline for regional trade and commerce, the high freight volumes and reliance on long-distance road transport pose significant health and safety risks, particularly for truck drivers and roadside communities.
In a context where formal education and access to training are limited, road safety, health, and wellbeing risks are often heightened. Transaid has long championed the delivery of timely, relevant messaging to truck drivers through trusted peers and networks, ensuring critical information reaches those most at risk.
This technical brief outlines a seven-month project implemented in partnership with North Star Alliance and the Kenya Transporters Association, with support from Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The project delivered targeted information and rapid sensitisation to truck drivers, during which frequent reports of eye and vision problems emerged. With additional support from the Gibbs Trust and Morel Trust, the initiative was expanded to include eye health screenings and the provision of prescription glasses.
