Technical Brief: Enhancing heavy goods vehicles driver training provision in Ghana

Ghana’s transport sector is expanding rapidly, driven by infrastructure developments like the Tema Port expansion and increasing demand for goods movement across West Africa. Yet, road traffic injuries remain a leading public health concern, compounded by inconsistent driver training standards.
In response, Transaid implemented a multi-year project to develop Ghana’s first nationally endorsed training standard for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers. With support from the Puma Energy Foundation and in collaboration with the Ghana Driver and Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), this initiative focused on aligning training with industry needs, building institutional capacity, and equipping trainers with the skills to cascade quality instruction nationwide.
This technical brief outlines the methodology, outcomes, and conclusions from the project that has assisted Ghana in positioning itself as a leader in road safety.
