More Madereva Salama Zaidi (Safer Roads)

In early 2026, Transaid launched a project in partnership with North Star Alliance to distribute up to 1,000 prescription glasses to truck drivers and residents of roadside communities along the North Corridor in Kenya. The project builds on a pilot, Madereva Salama Zaidi (Safer Roads) conducted the previous year, during which more than 4,000 eye assessments were completed over four months and just over 900 pairs of glasses were distributed. The results highlighted a clear need, with low visual acuity identified as a significant and ongoing road safety issue.

To drive traffic to the Wellness Centres and encourage truck drivers to engage with North Star Alliance’s health services, almost 1,800 information factsheets carrying targeted road safety and health messaging were distributed to drivers within the Mombasa port enclave.

For this phase, two new factsheets were developed. One promoted safer night driving practices, while the other encouraged the uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among individuals at risk of HIV transmission, in line with Ministry of Health messaging.
