Case study: Fani Evans
The Northern Corridor is a critical trade route linking the port of Mombasa in Kenya to several landlocked countries in East and Central Africa. The route is an essential link for trade and commerce across the region, however the high freight volumes and reliance on long-distance road transport along the corridor present health and safety risks, especially for drivers and roadside communities. Between October 2024 and March 2025, with support from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Transaid partnered with North Star Alliance to deliver targeted road safety and health information to professional truck drivers, along with eye health screenings and prescription glasses if required.
This case study shows how adding eye tests to non-communicable disease screenings enhances drivers’ wellbeing and empowers professionals like Fani Evans to work with greater independence and confidence, ultimately enhancing safety.
