We work with communities, partners, and governments to address transport challenges across sub-Saharan Africa.

We support drivers, governments, and training institutions to improve road safety

The World Health Organisation (WHO) African Region is the only region worldwide to see an increase in road traffic deaths – up by 17% from 2010 to 2021 (WHO, 2023).

As of 2019, road traffic injury remains the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5–29 years (WHO, 2023).

Drivers are at risk every time they sit behind the wheel due to a lack of legal enforcement and training, and badly maintained and overloaded vehicles.

We support people to transform their own lives through access to healthcare

In 2023, the WHO African Region accounted for 94% of malaria cases and 95% of malaria deaths globally.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounted for 70% of maternal deaths.

(SourceL World Health Organisation, 2020-2024).

We help implement Emergency Transport Systems (ETS) to transport pregnant mothers with complications, and children with severe malaria.

Our use of ETS is appropriate to context. For example, ETS has utilised ox-carts and bicycle ambulances in Zambia, public minibuses in Madagascar, and taxis in Nigeria.

We also train and support community health workers reach the families who need them.

We transform driver training

Our partner-led approach to improving road safety focuses on promoting safe driver behaviour and advocating for quality truck, bus and motorcycle training with long term programmes in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

We transform standards and systems

We encourage the exchange of knowledge and skills at national, regional, and global levels to deliver sustainable change to driver training standards across sub-Saharan Africa.

We share knowledge and skills with international partners and governments in order to create change. By working with local partners to implement our programmes, we can make a lasting and sustainable impact.

We transform rural access to vital services

Our partner-led approach to improving access to healthcare includes establishing emergency transport systems (ETS), primarily in rural areas, to reduce the barriers to healthcare posed by lack of transport. We also work to strengthen health supply chains in collaboration with local partners and governments.
