Transaid is pleased to share an article, published last month in the Journal of Transport Geography which discusses the peer research methodology used in two recent projects, partnering with Durham University and the University of the Western Cape, to conduct research relating to the transport challenges that young women and men face in South Africa, Nigeria and Tunisia.
This methodology has been championed by the principal investigator – Professor Gina Porter – for years, and involves building the capacity of researchers based in the target communities as a means of conducting more genuine engagement with research participants. Peer researchers undergo comprehensive training in conducting in-depth interviews, participant observation and writing mobility diaries. Their involvement offers rare insights into the transport and mobility challenges which many marginalised groups in low income areas face every day.
