East Africa

East Africa has been a recent programme for Transaid and, in particular, Kenya where Transaid conducted a 12 month Ministry of Health project in 2006 to implement the Transport Management System in the Coast and North East Provinces. Along with the management of this project, Transaid developed a regional programme, and sought funding to support this.

In the short term, Transaid oversaw the delivery of a high quality project with the provincial Ministries of Health and encouraged them to scale this up to a national programme. In the longer term, we would like the Transport Management System to reach beyond the Ministry of Health and be considered as a model for all government departments.

Kenya is an important regional hub for humanitarian agencies engaged in emergency relief work in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia. However, due to the political instability in the country at the moment, our work in Kenya has been put on hold, though we do hope to have the opportunity to continue our vital work in the near future.

Our aim is to engage the key agencies responsible for distributing relief supplies by emphasising the importance of building local transport management and driving skills in order to improve the efficiency of their operations.
