Transport Management

Transaid’s key area of focus is on improving transport management skills and training.  The Transaid Transport Management System (TMS) is our main tool and has five key components:

1. Human resource
2. Policy
3. Fleet management
4. Management information
5. Operational management.

It also uses seven key performance indicators to determine the efficiency of a system. The Transaid Transport Management Handbook outlines these principles in further detail.

Transaid TMS can be used by organisations running fleets of any size and succeeds because it empowers everyone who has a responsibility for transport, from the driver to the transport manager and anyone else within the organisation who uses the transport.  The system has been used to make dramatic improvements to service delivery across Ministries of Health in Africa and has also been utilised to improve the supply chain of health commodities.

While much of Transaid’s work in TMS has focused on improving healthcare, the system has also been applied to other public and private sector organisations such as the Female Market Traders Cooperative in Ghana where it was used to improve livelihoods.
