Livelihoods
Transaid is committed to developing a safe, effective, efficient African transport and logistics sector to improve livelihoods opportunities and reduce poverty.
We do this by building the skills of commercial drivers, small-scale transport operators and traders.
In sub-Saharan Africa, it can cost up to 250% more to move something the same distance as it would in developed countries. This is one of the factors that makes Africa’s exports uncompetitive. It also makes it difficult for farmers to move their goods and keeps the costs of food and household goods high for local people.
There are no internationally recognized commercial driving standards in Africa and commercial driving is seen as a last resort, not a professional career. Low-skilled drivers contribute to the inefficiencies of the sector and high rates of road related deaths & injuries.
International donors, like the World Bank, have made significant commitments to invest in roads as the answer to Africa’s transport problems, but little thought is being given to the people and vehicles that will be using them.
How we work
Transaid focuses on building the skills of people operating commercial vehicles on the roads, because the creation of a more vibrant, competitive sector and economy depends on them.
Improving the way that vehicles are managed, scheduled, driven and maintained will lower transport costs. This will make basic goods more affordable for local people, and open up markets for local producers. The transport & logistics sector will grow and become a more attractive place to work, creating skilled employment opportunities. And better drivers will make the roads safer.
One of our priorities is to create internationally recognized standards for professional driver training and licensing, and volunteers from UK transport & logistics companies are working with local trainers to share knowledge and best practice. We are currently seeking funding to develop Southern Africa regional driving standards, and we also aim to adapt the Transaid Transport Management System for small scale operators.
Our partners
We work with governments, licensing authorities, national training & vocational institutions, professional bodies, unions and companies who operate or subcontract transport in Africa.
