Introduction

2006 has been a tremendous year for Transaid, in which our work in Africa has expanded in breadth and depth. This is reflected in the call on our member companies for technical input to our work. Volunteer driver and motorcycle rider trainers, and maintenance workshop managers have helped us to implement our transport management programme with the Kenyan Ministry of Health. A team including young apprentice engineers helped to design and build a motorcycle ambulance trailer and train manufacturers in Nigeria to fabricate it locally. In Zambia, UK master drivers trained trainers of professional drivers in Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving techniques.

We now have Transaid representatives based in West, East and Southern Africa and, through them, we will see a substantial growth in our work programme during 2007. We anticipate that our work with the Kenyan Ministry of Health will grow from two provinces to a national programme. Our work on the development of professional driving standards and training in Zambia and Malawi continues to gather momentum. We are part of a consortium of partners, including Save The Children, that will work to establish vaccination as a routine health service for all children in Northern Nigeria. And our work to develop transport co-operatives for female market traders in Ghana is now underway. Beyond Africa, we have been invited to train local manufacturers to build the motorcycle ambulance trailer in Cambodia and we are considering other projects in South East Asia.

These are all exciting prospects for the year ahead which have been driven by the ambitions of our staff, partners and supporters and motivated by their vision to create a world where transport contributes fully to a better standard of living. I know that you will share this vision and hope you will agree that Transaid continues to make a vital contribution to the solution to poverty and disadvantage.
