Advocacy
Transaid advocates globally for practical interventions which reduce poverty and improve livelihoods across the developing world through creating better transport. Transaid promotes a variety of issues including safer road transport, improved management of vehicle fleets and better access to health services for people living in rural areas.
As well as meeting with representatives of key donor agencies and implementing partners, Transaid also attends and presents at conferences and publishes articles. Here are some of Transaid’s advocacy activities from the last 2 years.
Conferences
June 2011 Conference: People That Deliver, Geneva, Switzerland
Transaid provided input to the conference regarding pre-service training of health personnel in transport and distribution of essential medicines.
December 2010 Conference: Rethinking Referral Systems, New York, USA
Transaid presented on the Emergency Transport System in Northern Nigeria and provided technical inputs into the discussions around prompt, cost effective referral transport.
October 2010 Conference: The Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program, Kampala, Uganda.
Transaid undertook 2 presentations; The Professional Driver Training Project in Zambia and the Emergency Transport Scheme for Pregnant Women in Nigeria.
May 2010 Conference: Improving Transportation and Referral for Maternal Health, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars’ Global Health Initiative, Washington DC, USA.
Transaid were requested to attend to discuss the Emergency Transport Scheme, effective management of government ambulances and intermediate modes of transport (IMTs) such as bicycle ambulances.
May 2010 Conference: United Nations Commission for Sustainable Development, New York, USA.
Transaid delivered a presentation entitled “Maternal Health and Transport; Practical Solutions for a Practical Problem”.
May 2010 Conference: Fleet Forum Regional Conference, Dakar, Senegal.
Transaid delivered a presentation regarding the Professional Driver Training project in Zambia.

August 2010 Article: Bicycle Ambulances Have Impact – Appropriate Technology Journal
This article explains the design features of the bicycle ambulance used in the Transaid project undertaken in Zambia’s Eastern Province.
July 2010 Article: Maternal Mortality in Africa – Health Service Journal
Transaid were invited to write a piece on the issue of promptly referring pregnant women to health facilities in developing countries.
