The Princess Royal visits Transaid’s project in Ghana
On her recent visit to Ghana, following an invitation from CILT International, HRH spared a whole afternoon to visit Transaid’s project in Accra where we are helping the Accra Women’s Traders Cooperative to set up their own transport group operation. HRH met four of the leaders of the recently formed transport co-operative and had the opportunity to discuss the problems they face, transport being one of the main issues, and the ways in which the Transaid project might change this for the better.

Tyre Campaign completed in Southern Africa
This high profile campaign in Zambia and Malawi was supported by Bandvulc and Michelin, and clearly had considerable impact on the many people who participated. Zambian and Malawian institutions such as the police and private bus companies benefited from the training given by Phil Rochester, Michelin’s Head of Training in the UK. Government departments and the general public gained a greater understanding of the serious importance and contribution that proper tyre management will make on reducing road related deaths and injuries.

Wincanton and Salvesen second two members of staff for four months to help us define Transaid’s future strategy
Over the next four months Ben Rowlands from Christian Salvesen and Caroline Barber from Wincanton, will be working with Transaid’s Policy Strategy Committee to undertake research on the perception of Transaid in the transport industry and give advice on the way to increase our influence and gain significant support for a larger scale of operations.
Ben Rowlands says “During this four month project we expect to define and implement Transaid’s strategy for the future. This task will involve undertaking research on Transaid’s membership scheme, the industry positioning of Transaid, it’s development work in Africa and sources of funding from institutional donors. This new role is proving to be challenging and exciting and I believe that together with Wincanton we will achieve great successes”.
