Transaid Cycle Zambia Fundraiser of the Month

Wincanton's Nigel Donavan, part of the Pirates of the Zambian group

Wincanton’s

‘Pirates of the Zambian’

Transaid member company, Wincanton has been a long time supporter of Transaid.  In August 2008, Wincanton sent their very own Caroline Barber, Business Integration Manager to manage Transaid’s Professional Driver Training Project in Lusaka, Zambia for two years.

Now, seven adventurous Wincanton employees have banded together to form the ‘Pirates of the Zambian’, who will cycle over 420 kms across Zambia and work to raise a target fundraising goal of over £30,000.

On the fundraising front, Wendy Vaughan, HR Services Director comments:  “I have been really stunned at the level of support people have shown.  It's been a heart-warming exercise to see how willing people have been to support and get involved, particularly people in my office who have attended events, bought raffle tickets and really shown an interest.

‘Even complete strangers that I have told about the event have sponsored us!  At first the amount we needed to raise seemed daunting, but as a group we are making good progress towards our target.  Working on this as a team has been really good as we can support and encourage each other.”

Participants have been holding various events across the UK in order to raise funds, including holding pub quizzes, music gigs and Christmas Fayres.

Supporters of the Pirates of the Zambian include:

-  Wincanton – donated £3,750
-  RSA - donated £,1000
-  Resource & Transline - donated £1,000
-  New Order Search – sponsorship of £500
-  Group RCI – donated a raffle prize for a week’s holiday accommodation
-  The Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa - donated a raffle prize for a day’s spa membership for two

Additional donations have been made from other companies, such as Argos, Asda, Comet and Screwfix, to name a few.  The Pirates of the Zambian have already raised over £20,000.
