Mr Levy Kamanga, Acting Rector of the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Zambia , has been appointed as Transaid’s Regional Coordinator for the Professional Driver Training Project. His role will focus on the harmonisation of professional driver training standards between Zambia and Tanzania and across regional borders.
Mr Kamanga was instrumental to the success of the Professional Driver Training Project in Zambia . Through sharing lessons learned he helped establish the project at the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Tanzania . In June 2010, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the ITC, NIT and Transaid to encourage skills sharing between countries within Africa as well as the UK .
To take the project to the next level, Mr Kamanga’s role will focus on ensuring a joined up approach between the two training institutions. He will also play a significant role in liaising with governments in both respective countries to advocate for international driver training standards and curricula to be adopted and harmonised, and that issues affecting commercial driver training and road safety remain high on the agenda.
Truck and bus drivers travel across borders daily and it is extremely important for driving standards and road legislation to be joined up to reflect this. A unified driver trainer curriculum across the East and Southern African region will go a long way towards tackling the shortage of skilled, well trained drivers and will make a significant contribution to reducing the number of unnecessary road deaths on key trade routes.
Mr Kamanga’s position is part-time for two years and is possible thanks to the support of several companies within the Professional Driver Training Project Consortium including MAN Truck & Bus, Bandvulc, Michelin and DHL.
