A three way Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Transaid, the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Zambia and the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Tanzania. This marks the expansion of the Professional Driver Training Project to a new region and will draw upon expertise developed from the initial establishment of the project in Zambia. Read more here…

Gary Parmar, Driver Trainer for Hoyer UK, returned to the ITCT following his earlier visit in August 2009 to deliver another driver training input. His work included consolidation of skills learned by the exisiting trainers and hazardous chemical refresher training. Gary also conducted intensive training for two newly appointed driver trainers which focused on practical skills to bring them up to speed.
Neil Rettie, Driver Trainer for Stagecoach returned to Zambia to continue bus and coach driver training. Neil worked with six major coach companies to provide free training for over 60 drivers. The course included theoretical and practical training to assess basic driving skills and correct faults and also gave students the opportunity to practice what was learned. Neil also advised the Zambian Road Transport Safety Agency (RTSA) on bus driver licensing and the need for recognised training before a license can be given. There are currently over 30,000 bus operator licenses in operation in Zambia.

Following the departure of Transaid Zambia Programme Manager Caroline Barber, Transaid volunteer John Cook, a retired senior logistics professional, visited the project to review progress and to draw up a strategic plan to ensure quality standards continue to be maintained. This part of the project is crucial for ensuring self-sustainability and will ultimately determine its success.
