January
Shaun Dempsey, senior driver trainer for CEVA logistics, facilitated a further module in driver training to the three existing driver trainers at the centre to consolidate their knowledge. Shaun also held trainig on fire safety and management.
February
Three trucks (donated by MAN Truck & Bus), two trailers (donated by Britcom) and a car were handed over to the ITCT at an official ceremony attended by the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Vocational Training. These trucks were shipped to Africa by Wallenius Wilhelmsen in November and will provide a much needed resource, more than doubling the previous number of vehicles available. This will reduce the trainer to student ratio giving many more opportunities to gain necessary practical experience. A fourth driver trainer was also recruited to the team to enable the centre to cope with the increased demand in driver training.
March
A senior driver trainer has been appointed from within the existing team at the ITCT to take on the responsibility of managing the department and ensuring that consistent quality training standards continue to be met. This postholder is also responsible for ensuring all vehicles are regularly serviced and maintained.
The project has also been extended to the copperbelt (mining) region of Zambia. With the support of Turnpan in Kitwe, who have donated office space and parking, this has enabled people to gain access to quality driver training in key trucking towns where there is significant demand for well trained HGV drivers.
