Transaid Develops TMS Self-Learning Manual with John Snow International

Two transport officers looking at training documents

Transaid was requested by John Snow International (JSI) through USAID to develop its well-established Transport Management System (TMS) training manual into an easily accessible self-learning tool.

The idea was to make the information widely available to transport managers of public health services in developing countries so  managers could teach themselves the principles of effective transport management. The new Guide was developed by Transaid in late 2009, with advice from highly-experienced transport professionals and uses the original Transaid TMS manual as its foundation.

The Guide features new elements to make sure it achieves its purpose of being an effective self-learning tool. These include structuring the guide into learning modules, highlighting key learning points within each module to help users focus on the most essential aspects of TMS, plenty of illustrations, case studies and self-test exercises to reinforce the learning process.  Care was also taken to ensure TMS ideas were communicated using approachable language.

The new online TMS guide is a tremendously important development in making best TMS principles and practices available more widely. Transaid is delighted that through JSI and USAID support and interest it has been possible to do this. We are looking to find other ways to make essential aspects of TMS learning more accessible using new technologies to transmit this important information in the future.

The Guide has now been published and is freely available as an online resource for transport managers worldwide. It is on the JSI website and can also be found in our resources section.
