Tanzania, Professional Driver Training Project Expands to East Africa, Jun. 2010

CEO of Transaid shaking hands with Tanzanian and Zambian partners

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Transaid, the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Zambia and the National Institute of Transport (NIT), a similar training organization in Tanzania.

The NIT will benefit from Transaid’s involvement in building its organizational capacity to deliver bus and coach and HGV driver training.  This is an extremely timely intervention as the Tanzanian government embarks on the implementation of a passenger bus rapid transit system which will require over 2000 bus drivers to be trained.

This three way partnership will draw upon lessons learned and expertise developed through the initial ITC partnership and marks the extension of the Professional Driver Training Project to a new region.  Senior trainers at the ITC may also be seconded to Tanzania encouraging peer to peer learning.

The expansion is highly important for the harmonization of driver training standards across major trade routes in East and Southern Africa, which are absolutely necessary for the reduction of road crashes and subsequent deaths.
