Motorcycle instructor Roger Salmon gives instruction to NIT trainer

Motorcycle trainer, Roger Salmon, spent two weeks at the National Institute of Transport (NIT) to deliver a motorcycle training course to develop the knowledge and skills of driver trainers at the NIT in conjunction with DHL.

Roger trained two DHL couriers and one NIT trainer on key aspects of motorcycle riding beginning with a review of each trainer’s riding style.  Roger advised them on how to practice better vehicle control, especially at slow speeds, and gave additional practical on the road training. Following this, training focused on instructional techniques including the practice of role play and feedback.

The new trainers had the opportunity to put what they had learned into practice through delivering training to another courier from  DHL under Roger’s supervision.  This training marks the first of many inputs planned over the next two years to increase the driver training function of the NIT including bus and truck driver training.

Transaid is working to improve professional driver training standards across sub-Saharan Africa in order to reduce number of road deaths and improve the economic capacity of the transport and logistics industry.  The initial project began in Zambia in August 2008 and thanks to its success it is now being implemented in Tanzania in partnership with the NIT.

This course was funded by DHL in association with Transaid.
