Tanzania, Bus driver training gets underway with National Express, Apr. 2011

Tanzanian National Institute of Transport bus

Two driver trainers from National Express have delivered the first bus driver training input at the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Tanzania.  During a two week trip Raj Bhutta, driver trainer and John Mitchell, examiner were responsible for assessing and upskilling six driver trainers.  In addition to practical advice, they also shared tools and techniques to improve their instructional capabilities.

Bus driving in Tanzania is often a job of last resort and drivers receive little or no formal driver training.  As a result, driving standards are often extremely poor and drivers have little awareness of the dangers on the road and the risks to themselves and others.  Transaid is working with the NIT to deliver more practical training to ensure trainees have the experience required to be safer and more efficient drivers.

This work is part of Transaid’s ongoing Professional Driver Training Project which aims to reduce the number of road crashes which occur at an alarming rate, through creating more skilled and safer drivers.  In Tanzania over 3000 people are killed in road crashes every year meaning on average eight people die every single day.  With the help of companies like National Express, Transaid is able to address this challenge and provide a solution.  Two more volunteers from National Express are due to deliver a second bus driver training input later this year.
