A Very Special Christmas Hamper to Zambia

On December 13th, Transaid was invited to attend the Freight Transport Association’s inaugural FTA Logistics Awards, where we had a very specific request for those at the event – help us continue to transform lives in Zambia by sending a very special Christmas hamper!

Our partners at the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Zambia have trained thousands of professional drivers since we began working with them in 2008; thanks largely to the support given by our corporate members and supporters from the UK transport and logistics industry.

The ITC undertake in-house maintenance of their fleet and have the expertise to keep these precious training vehicles on the road, ready and able to train hundreds of drivers each year.

However, the ITC is now badly in need of some crucial spare parts. Genuine parts are extremely expensive in landlocked Zambia, but some dealers in the UK have offered to help Transaid source these parts at a much lower cost. They can provide two gearboxes, brake pads, break disks and some other assorted essential spares.

At the FTA Logistics Awards, Transaid CEO Caroline Barber addressed attendees to ask for pledges towards the spare parts: “Tonight we are inviting you to help make this a Christmas to remember for the ITC. Your support you will really make a difference to the people in Zambia who depend so much on these training vehicles. What a Christmas hamper this would be!”.

The level of support was overwhelming, with pledges totalling £3,000 from Backhouse Jones, BigChange, Flogas, Howard Tenens, Meantime Communications, Romex World and Suttons Tankers. Thanks so much to everyone involved for their support!
