Transaid's position on The UK Department for International Development's 3rd White Paper on International Development

 

Our response to the White Paper

The White Paper pays particular attention to the problems faced by Africa and emphasises the importance of economic growth as the key factor in poverty reduction. The need for increased investment in infrastructure is highlighted as an important mechanism to stimulate growth.  Transaid’s position is that investment in new roads and other transport related infrastructure should always be accompanied by an investment in transport management skills to create an efficient, affordable and safe commercial and passenger transport sector. Otherwise, use of the roads will remain the expensive privilege of the few, and the already appalling road death and injury rate will increase exponentially.  Read the full response (pdf format)

Sierra Eye:  A close look at Sierra Leone’s life

Sierra Eye is a collection of articles published online relating to Sierra Leone.  This article was written about the work that Transaid undertook in Sierra Leone to investigate introducing a Transport Management System. After the decade-long civil war which left over 50,000 dead Transaid found that rural areas were hit worst in terms of difficult access to transport and social services reliant on transport.

World Bicycle Relief

World Bicycle Relief is an independent organisation to provide access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles.  Transaid, together with World Bicycle Relief and Disacare are piloting a bicycle ambulance trailer program in the Eastern Province of Zambia through a grant from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
