Helen Varma
Helen Varma Trustee

Born and raised in East Africa, and educated in East Africa and the Caribbean, and with a career that included two years working in Nigeria, Helen has a long-founded personal interest in the developing world. This interest is reflected in Helen’s 25 career in the charity sector. An experienced professional fundraiser, Helen spent five years with Save the Children, and a further five years leading two highly successful UK-based appeals (96-98 and then 2008-11) for a Kenyan educational charity. In addition, Helen has fifteen years’ experience as a respected independent Consultant and Interim Director working for a wide variety of charitable organisations, mainly humanitarian and international development, with the occasional foray into Arts / Higher Education. Clients have included renowned organisations such as NACRO, RedR UK, Children in Crisis, Sightsavers, Anti-Slavery International, Cass Business School and the British Library, as well as many smaller, developing charities.
Helen’s commitment to humanitarian and international development work is also reflected in her portfolio of a few carefully-chosen Trusteeships: Sabre Charitable Trust (improving pre-school education in Ghana); Starehe UK (secondary education for disadvantaged children in Kenya); All in Diary (improving awareness and understanding of good humanitarian practice).
